Bundaberg Solar Hospital Progress

GEM Energy’s installation of the largest Solar Energy System on an Australian hospital is now 70% completed. The Friendly Society Private Hospital at Bundaberg decided to jump aboard the solar train amidst rising energy prices and a wish to operate more sustainably.

The 575kW system is projected to pay for itself in just 4 years and save the not-for-profit hospital over $3M in the first 10 years.

Solar Energy will reduce the hospital’s electricity consumption by a whopping 919,000kWh per year, with an additional reduction of 229,000kWh achieved through the LED Lighting Upgrade completed by our in-house Commercial LED Lighting Specialist.

Progress Update: Solar Hospital Bundaberg

The Friendlies Society Hospital in Bundaberg is going Solar – we are currently installing over 500kW of Solar PV, that’s 1,230 x 435w Panels! The project is yet another showcase of the excellent workmanship of our local Bundaberg installers, Elvery’s Electrical Service.

For this solar system we specified only the highest quality products – Sunpower Panels & Solaredge Inverters. We selected the Solaredge inverters due to the many obstacles on the roof, creating irregular shading patterns during different times of the day/year. Solaredge inverters come with module level power optimization which essentially allows each panel to work independently, similar to micro-inverters. Due to the many shading obstacles, having individually performing panels increases efficiency and output substantially.

A 30% increase to an $80,000 per month electricity bill, combined with a wish to increase sustainability, prompted the Friendly Society Private Hospital to take action: over the next few months, we will be installing over 500kW of Solar PV and Solar Hot Water on the hospital’s roof! Stuart Bonnett, the Friendly Society Private Hospital’s Business Development Manager, said:
“This system will save The Friendlies millions of dollars. As a not-for-profit hospital, that is millions of dollars that go back into services for our patients and this community. We will be able to reduce our impact on the environment at the same time,”
