Cheaper Home Batteries Program
Unlock big savings with the Cheaper Home Batteries Program initiative from the Australian Government.
Solar Battery Rebate
Key Features of the Cheaper Home Batteries Program
Starting July 1, 2025, the Australian Government is launching the Cheaper Home Batteries Program, a $2.3 billion initiative designed to make home battery storage more affordable.
This rebate offers up to $372 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) of usable battery capacity – minus administrative fees and charges, potentially reducing installation costs by approximately 30%.
- Up to $372 per kWh of usable battery capacity.
- Average savings of $4,000 on typical battery installation.
- Eligible for both new and existing solar systems.
- Eligible battery systems from 5kWh – 50kWh usable battery capacity.
- Batteries need to be VPP capable, but you’re not required to participate in a VPP.
- Owners of existing batteries will be eligible if they choose to install another battery.
- The program is set to run until 2030 with the discounted amount set to reduce each year.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is home battery storage?
Home battery storage allows homeowners to store excess solar energy generated during the day for use later, such as at night or during peak energy demand. By capturing and storing energy from your solar panels, home battery storage reduces reliance on the grid, lowers electricity bills, and boosts energy independence. It’s a smart investment that maximises the efficiency of your home solar system.
How does home battery storage work with solar?
Home battery storage works seamlessly with solar panels by storing the extra electricity generated during the day. When your solar panels produce more energy than you need, the surplus is stored in your home battery. You can then use this stored energy when the sun isn’t shining, such as at night or on cloudy days, reducing your need for grid power. This combination of solar and battery storage enhances the self-sufficiency and sustainability of your home energy system.
Are there and government rebates for home batteries?
Yes! The Australian Government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program, launching on July 1, 2025, will offer rebates of up to $372 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) of usable battery capacity. This rebate is available for both new and existing home solar systems that integrate battery storage. The program will make home battery storage more affordable for homeowners across Australia.
How long will my battery storage last?
Home battery systems are designed to last between 10 and 15 years, depending on the type of battery and usage. Most battery storage systems are backed by warranties that cover 5 to 10 years. The longevity of the battery depends on factors like the number of charge cycles and how frequently the battery is used. Regular maintenance and optimal usage can help extend the life of your battery.
Will a battery keep my power on during a blackout?
Many home battery systems provide backup power during a blackout, but this feature depends on the specific battery model and setup. Batteries with blackout protection will automatically supply power to essential appliances when the grid goes down. If backup power is important to you, ensure that your battery system includes this feature. It’s a great way to increase your home’s energy resilience, especially during power outages.
What size battery storage do I need?
The size of your home battery storage system depends on your household’s energy consumption and how much solar energy you generate. On average, a home uses around 10-15 kWh of electricity per day, so a battery system of similar size is usually sufficient to store enough energy for evening use. However, larger households or those with higher energy needs may require a bigger system. A GEM Energy consultant can assess your needs and help you choose the right battery size for your home solar and battery setup.
What is a Virtual Power Plant (VPP) and do I need to join one?
A Virtual Power Plant (VPP) connects home battery storage systems across a network to share stored energy and stabilize the electricity grid. By participating in a VPP, your home battery can contribute to the collective energy supply during peak demand times. While some batteries are designed to be VPP-ready, joining a VPP is typically optional.
Can I install a home battery if I don’t have a solar system?
Yes, you can install a home battery without a solar system. In this case, your battery will be charged from the grid instead of solar energy. However, a battery without solar panels won’t provide the same energy savings, as it’s mainly storing electricity purchased from the grid. Pairing a home battery with solar panels is the most cost-effective option, as it allows you to store your own renewable energy and minimise grid reliance.
What happens if my battery storage system runs out of power?
Yes, you can install a home battery without a solar system. In this case, your battery will be charged from the grid instead of solar energy. However, a battery without solar panels won’t provide the same energy savings, as it’s mainly storing electricity purchased from the grid. Pairing a home battery with solar panels is the most cost-effective option, as it allows you to store your own renewable energy and minimise grid reliance.
