World-renowned Australia Zoo at Beerwah, Queensland, is famous for its efforts in wildlife conservation, education, and exhibition. As part of the organisation’s mission towards environmental sustainability and energy independence, Australia Zoo has now made the switch to solar energy.
The 638kW solar power plant at Australia Zoo will produce significant power bill savings, meaning that more resources can go back into conservation and maintenance.
The facilities of the zoo are spread out over hundreds of acres and have complex energy needs including heating pumps, pools, kitchens, retail stores, and more. The consulting process was rigorous in order to nail down the particulars of the project scope, design, return and installation. The project went to tender, where extensive research was conducted by the zoo, in order to find the best company to provide this complex renewable energy solution. Australia Zoo chose GEM Energy due to expertise in quality and our completely in-house team of consultants, engineers, monitoring staff, operations managers and installers, all with years of experience.
Originally, the network enforced a system size limit of only 30kW. They were concerned of voltage rise and the affect that a large-scale system would have on the quality of the network. In order to overcome this challenge, we sought reports from multiple independent contractors, none of which could do the job. We took matters into our own hands, producing an in-depth report that proved that the system would have minimal impact on the grid and much more solar could be installed. This ultimately led to this project becoming a reality.
GEM Energy installed over 1,900 solar panels on the roof of the famous Crocoseum. The solar power plant is set to reduce carbon emissions by 16,500 tonnes over 25 years.
