Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions about cutting energy costs, boosting sustainability, or making solar work for your business? You’re in the right place — explore our most common questions from SME owners just like you.

How can solar and battery systems help reduce my business’s peak demand charges?

Commercial solar and battery systems are powerful tools for peak demand reduction. During the day, solar panels generate electricity that powers your business directly, reducing the amount of energy drawn from the grid when usage is highest. This immediately helps to lower peak demand readings.

But the real game-changer is battery storage. A battery system can be programmed to discharge during your known peak periods — for example, mid-afternoon or early evening — supplying your equipment with stored energy instead of pulling high-demand loads from the grid. This strategy is called load-shaving, and it can lead to major savings on your electricity bills by flattening your demand curve.

GEM Energy offers advanced monitoring and energy management tools to track your usage patterns and configure your system to respond automatically to spikes in demand. The result? Lower bills, better efficiency, and a more stable energy profile — without having to change how or when you operate your business.

Peak demand refers to the highest level of electricity your business draws from the grid at any one time, typically during busy operating hours or when multiple high-energy devices run at once (e.g. air conditioning, machinery, ovens). Energy providers often charge extra fees based on your peak demand — not just your total usage — through what’s called a demand tariff. These fees can significantly inflate your electricity bills, even if they occur for just 15–30 minutes in a billing cycle.

By reducing peak demand, your business can lower or even eliminate these costly demand charges. This is especially important for SMEs operating in sectors like manufacturing, hospitality, or warehousing, where large equipment or HVAC systems drive sudden spikes in usage. Understanding and managing your peak demand is one of the fastest ways to take control of your energy costs — and that’s where GEM Energy’s tailored solutions come in.

Yes — and in fact, small to medium businesses are often the ones who benefit most from going solar. If your business has consistent electricity use during daylight hours, even modest usage, you’re an ideal candidate for commercial solar. Whether you’re running a café, a dental clinic, a local manufacturing facility, or a retail outlet, the energy cost savings can be substantial. Many SMEs overlook solar because they assume it’s only worthwhile for large corporations. In reality, even a small system can create a powerful impact on your monthly expenses, freeing up cash flow for other parts of your business.

At GEM Energy, we assess your energy profile to design a system that fits your exact needs — not too big, not too small — just right for maximising return.

The cost depends on your energy use, roof size, and goals, but GEM Energy works to ensure that the investment is affordable and cash flow-positive from day one. A small to medium business solar system typically ranges from $10,000 to $100,000, but most of our SME clients access government incentives such as Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs), the Cheaper Home Batteries Program, and many take advantage of interest-free finance or Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) — meaning no upfront payment. Instead, you pay off the system with the savings it generates.

GEM Energy handles the entire process — including securing incentives, custom finance options, and quoting transparently — so you’re not left guessing what the real costs or benefits are. In nearly all cases, we design systems that pay for themselves well before the warranty period ends, making solar a smart financial and operational move.

Minimal to zero disruption — that’s what we aim for with every SME installation.

Our experienced teams know how important it is that your operations continue uninterrupted. Installation usually takes a few days, depending on the size and complexity of the system, and we schedule our work around your busiest times to avoid interference. GEM Energy’s project managers work closely with your team from day one, coordinating delivery and installation in a way that keeps you in the loop without creating extra work for your staff. All safety protocols are strictly followed, and we handle all the permits, approvals, and paperwork so you can stay focused on running your business.

The return on investment (ROI) for commercial solar and battery systems in the SME space is among the most compelling of any capital investment. Depending on your location, energy usage, and finance arrangement, most small to medium businesses see payback in as little as 2 to 5 years — sometimes even sooner. After that, it’s pure profit. With solar panels lasting 25+ years and battery storage systems averaging around 10–15 years, the long-term financial benefits are significant. You’re also protected from rising electricity prices, which can otherwise eat into margins over time.

Our team provides detailed, transparent ROI modelling based on your actual energy bills, so you can see your projected savings before committing. Plus, with energy efficiency improvements, you can reduce not only costs but also your environmental footprint — something that can further improve your brand and long-term customer loyalty.

Battery storage adds flexibility, resilience, and further cost control to your energy setup. Instead of sending excess solar energy back to the grid at low feed-in rates, a battery lets you store that energy for use during the evening, peak billing times, or even in the event of a grid outage. This is especially valuable for businesses that operate after hours, need backup power for critical systems, or are located in areas with unreliable grid infrastructure. Battery systems also help with load-shifting — using stored power when energy is most expensive — to reduce demand charges.

With GEM Energy, we help you select the right battery capacity for your operations, and we integrate the system so it works seamlessly with your solar panels and energy management tools. It’s a smart upgrade that improves energy independence and prepares your business for a more flexible energy future.

GEM Energy isn’t just another solar company — we’re an award-winning energy solutions partner with a strong track record of delivering results to small and medium businesses across Australia. Unlike many installers who offer generic solutions, we tailor every system to the unique needs of your business — factoring in energy usage, goals, property type, and budget. Our vertically integrated approach means we handle everything in-house: system design, engineering, finance, installation, maintenance, and support. You get one point of contact from start to finish, and we don’t walk away after the install. Our clients choose GEM because of our reputation for quality, reliability, and accountability. We’ve worked with everyone from small family-run businesses to national franchise chains — and we apply the same care and expertise to every project, no matter the size.

Yes — and GEM Energy specialises in helping SME clients access the full range of financial incentives and low-risk funding options available. Federal government schemes can help cut upfront costs, and depending on your state or territory, you may also qualify for additional rebates or interest-free loans. For businesses that want to avoid any upfront expense, we offer flexible finance options including solar leases, commercial loans, and Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) — where you simply pay for the electricity generated, not the system itself.

We work with trusted financial partners to offer competitive rates and structure deals that keep your cash flow healthy while still benefiting from long-term savings. We also take care of all the paperwork, compliance, and claims — so you don’t have to.

GEM Energy has worked with a wide variety of SMEs across nearly every industry, including retail shops, industrial workshops, hospitality venues, health and wellness providers, logistics and warehousing operations, agriculture, and education. If your business uses electricity — and most do — we can help you reduce costs, become more sustainable, and improve energy independence.

We tailor each solution to the needs of your sector. For example, hospitality businesses often benefit from load-shifting during peak evening hours, while manufacturers may require larger systems with battery backup to ensure production continuity. Our team has the depth of experience to understand your challenges and deliver a solution that fits your business goals — not just your roof size.

Solar export limiting, sometimes called clipping, refers to a restriction placed on how much electricity your solar system can send back to the grid. This is often required by your local electricity network provider to maintain grid stability, especially in areas where many businesses or homes already have solar systems installed.

So, what does this mean for your business? If your solar system produces more energy than you’re using on-site, the excess is typically exported back to the grid. But if export limits are in place — for example, zero-export or a capped export rate — your system will “clip” or curtail any additional generation that exceeds your allowed export level. That excess power is essentially lost, unless you have battery storage to capture and use it later.

At GEM Energy, we design your system to maximise self-consumption — meaning your business uses as much of the solar power on-site as possible. We also help navigate local export rules and, where appropriate, integrate battery storage to store clipped energy for use during peak times or after hours. This helps you avoid waste, reduce peak demand, and squeeze even more value from your investment.

Export limiting doesn’t mean solar isn’t worth it — it just means your system needs to be intelligently designed to work with your energy profile and within network constraints. That’s exactly what we specialise in.
